Vapor Smoothing

The ASM VX1 (now part of DyeMansion) is an industrial vapor-smoothing machine that transforms rough, powder-based 3D-printed plastic parts into smooth, sealed, professional-looking products.

Solutions

Benefits of ASM VX1 Vapor Smoothing
Smooth, premium surface finish: Significantly reduces the rough, grainy texture typically associated with powder-bed 3D printing.
Reduced surface porosity: Creates a more closed surface and can improve resistance to moisture and contamination.
Improved cleanability: Smooth surfaces are easier to clean and maintain.
Enhanced appearance: Provides a professional finish comparable in appearance to injection-molded plastic components.
Complex geometry processing: Solvent vapor can reach surfaces that are difficult to access using conventional mechanical finishing methods.
Functional surface improvement: Can improve surface-related performance and durability, depending on the material and application.

Compatible 3D Printing Materials

The ASM VX1 supports a range of engineering-grade thermoplastics, including:
PA12 (Nylon 12): Ideal for functional components, enclosures, mechanical parts and consumer products.
PA11 (Nylon 11): Suitable for durable, flexible and impact-resistant applications.
TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane): Used for flexible components, protective parts and industrial applications.

Material compatibility and finishing results depend on the specific printing process and material formulation.

Applications
ASM VX1 vapor smoothing is suitable for a wide range of industries and products:
Automotive: Interior components, covers, brackets and functional parts.
Medical and healthcare equipment: Device housings, accessories and components requiring improved cleanability.
Consumer products: Eyewear, accessories, ergonomic handles and custom products.
Industrial manufacturing: Machine housings, grippers, tooling and functional components.
Electronics: Protective enclosures, sensor housings and control-system components.
Robotics: Lightweight covers, custom housings and mechanical assemblies.

How Does Vapor Smoothing Work?
The ASM VX1 uses a controlled vapor-based process to modify the outermost surface of a 3D-printed polymer component.
During treatment, solvent vapor interacts with the material's surface, allowing microscopic irregularities to soften and reflow. As the surface stabilizes, it becomes smoother and less porous.
Unlike sanding or abrasive polishing, vapor smoothing does not rely on mechanical contact with the part, making it particularly useful for complex geometries.
